Journey of Your Soul by Shepherd Hoodwin

Even at birth, everyone is unique. Can heredity alone account for the complex differences in people’s temperaments and styles?

“Michael” is a group of souls who teach that we are eternal beings journeying from the Tao and back again in an adventure of exploration and creativity. The Michael teachings, an extraordinary body of channeled work, propose that we are each unique souls who deliberately take on a specific combination of traits to give us the experiences we seek.

In this fascinating book, Shepherd Hoodwin expertly discusses these teachings from his vantage point as a Michael channel.

These teachings address many age-old questions, such as “How did we become who we are?” “Why are we here?” “Where are we going?” and “How does the universe work?”

In addition, The Journey of Your Soul seeks to shed light on questions about channeling itself, such as “How does channeling work?”, “Why do different channels receive conflicting information?” and “What does it take to become a channel?”

Channeling is often seen as a spontaneous, intuitive, mystical practice, but Hoodwin shows us that it is possible, and indeed beneficial, to engage all parts of the human consciousness. His unique analytical approach to channeling will help readers gain a firm intellectual understanding of the processes involved.

Journey of Your Soul: A Channel Explores the Michael Teachings is my first introduction to the Michael Teachings. It may be yours too, so I’ll take a moment to outline the background and the source of the material.

What are the Michael Teachings?

In 1979, writer Chelsea Quinn Yarbro and her friends began sharing messages channeled from a group collective of 1050 discarnate souls who referred to themselves as “Michael”. The group revealed that they were using Yarbro and her associates as conduits for their spiritual teachings, though, over the years, others have also tapped into Michael and added to the library of their insights. Based on the transcripts of these channeled sessions, Chelsea Quinn Yarbro went on to write four books about the Michael Teachings.

The Michaelians (if that is the correct term!) revealed that their intention behind connecting with humanity was simply to help questioners become more consciously aware of themselves and thereby better able to make their own decisions in life. Indeed, the Michael transmissions focus on the experiences that we gather from living our daily lives and through lifetime after lifetime.

It is said that Michael…

…provides a revealing set of tools that help chart our spiritual progress as we journey from first incarnation to last. Diligent application of this system teaches us to validate our overall development in the re-incarnational cycle, show where we are on the path, what lessons we will encounter, why we are here, and what is yet to come. It also helps us understand the unique qualities we bring to the world, and why people and societies are the way they are.

The core principles of the Michael philosophy involves the learning how to develop self-acceptance and tolerance for others. These are attained through the use of a set of tools that Michael calls Overleaves—principles that describe the various attributes of our personality, showing us how we perceive and interact with, our world. By learning about these personality traits, we can better understand the inherent behavior patterns of ourselves, and the people around us.

Who is Michael?

According to the Michael Teachings, before we begin our new lives in this incarnation, we choose one of seven Roles which will then ac

t as a psycho-spiritual framework of who we are and how we tend to interact with others.

These Roles are defined as:

  • Priests
  • Servers
  • Sages
  • Artisans
  • Warriors
  • Kings and
  • Scholars

Any of these leads to the final goal of life: to learn unconditional love for all of humanity.

Understanding the Role that we have taken on in this lifetime is said to help us to understand our place in life and the way that we form relationships with members of our own and other classes.

Our Review of Journey of Your Soul by Shepherd Hoodwin

I must state from the outset, I am not a great enthusiast of the practice of channeling—nor did this book do much to cause me to alter my opinion.

Channeling is, by its very nature, a very hit and miss practice with the potential to lead one into all sorts of psychic dangers and esoteric dead ends.

To the author’s credit, he readily accepts the short-comings of the practice and in the earliest sections of the book, he details, at length, the problems and dangers of relying upon any sort of esoteric material that springs from so-called spirit realms.

While I did not like the book, this section was the most powerful and insightful treatise on channeling that I have read.

Sadly, for me, the rest of this rather bloated publication was not so engaging and simply limped on through a lingering death.

An essential flaw in channeled material of any type is that it ages very quickly—an argument perhaps for questioning its acclaimed qualification as a Universal Truth.

The Michael Teachings, as presented in Journey of Your Soul, fall prey to the same ravages of time in that they have the feel of psycho-babble circa mid to late 1970s and from a time before the world had discovered the powerful and infinitely more applicable psychological insights of people like Carl Jung.

Try as I might to embrace the concepts of Overleaves and Roles, I simply was unable to see how they fitted into my own personal life or life experience—or anyone else I know. Maybe this information works for those people who find standard religious teachings failing them and want a substitute framework for their lives, but, ultimately, I can’t help thinking that most would outgrow its rather limited and condescending themes on archetypal Soul patterning.

Even if you have an empathy with the Michael Teachings, this book would not add a great deal to your understanding of how to integrate their principles into your daily life, which was the intention of the Michael collective in the first place.
