The Calm Center by Steve Taylor

The Calm Center by Steve Taylor

What is the one thing that we carry around with us all day long but which we never seem able to find when we need it most?

Our calm center — that place that exists within our inner psyches but which, mainly as a consequence of the busy lives we lead, we struggle to access and to regain a sense of balance and equilibrium.

What exactly is the calm center?

It is a place of mental and emotional stillness or inner spaciousness that the Buddha called ‘sunyata’ or empiness.

Coincidently, the calm center also happens to be the title of a book by lecturer and acclaimed spiritual author Steve Taylor.

In his book, the author presents a collection of what Echart Tollee refers to in his introduction to his book as ‘poetic spiritual discourse’.

Is The Calm Center an anthology of poems or poetic prose? Neither really. Instead, it is an amalgamation of a number of short spiritual insights focussing upon a wide range of psycho-spiritual topis which have flowed from the pen, and calm center, of the author.

A quick run down of some of the verses gives a flavour of the book’s content.

They include titles such as ‘The Voice Inside Your Head’, ‘The Spiritual Teacher’, ‘The Alchemy of Attention’, ‘The Struggle’, ‘The Primal Soul’, ‘The Force’, ‘The Perfect Paradox’ and ‘The Essence’.

Our Review of ‘The Calm Center’ by Steve Taylor

Many books of this type tend to focus upon the light, bright, loving and harmonious side of life but, in The Calm Center: Reflections and Meditations for Spiritual Awakening Steve Taylor focusses upon the darkness that descends during our times of trial and difficulty.

As you can probably tell, I am not a great fan of this type of writing or method of disseminating spiritual guidance but I have to say that, overall, this book worked well for me. Once I got into its core message, I was quite surprised to find that reading it became an enjoyable and uplifting experience.

I should add, though, that not every ‘spiritual discourse’ in the book worked for me immediately. Some annoyed me greatly on first reading but I found that very often, when I returned to them again a day or so later, I started to appreciate their inherent beauty.

So, as a publication, The Calm Center: Reflections and Meditations for Spiritual Awakening is quite ‘alive’ and carries its own energy. It is almost as if, in a sense, the insights offered by these verses stems from the wisdom—that energetic influence of Sophia that speaks to us when we are still and at one with ourselves.

‘The Calm Center’ is a collection of deeply insightful and transformative words of spiritual power. It is a book to be savored!
