If you gave your body a voice, what do you think it would say to you? Maybe it would be happy and pleased with the way that you treat it each day; or perhaps it would tell you that it was sad and angry that the messages it sends to you regarding its state of health are regularly being ignored.
As a society we are not used to the idea that we can engage deeply with our bodies and understand something about its innate wisdom. We tend to get doctors and other medical experts to do the talking for it.
As a healer and a bodywork therapist Suzanne Scurlock-Durana is on a personal mission to restore our former, but now long lost, connection to our physical operating systems and to reveal the hidden meanings behind its communications — information that can bring such powerful self-healing insights to the fore.
In her book Reclaiming Your Body Suzanne Scurlock-Durana explains how as a result of her own health issues she reached an understanding that her body’s pains and her physical issues were treatable in a holistic way through the application of a gentle hands-on system of care. From that point she became increasingly fascinated by the subject and later developed a program that she called Healing from the Core.
The author explains how the route back to full integration with the wisdom of the body requires a confrontation with five essential myths — misconceptions that many people live by regarding their bodies.
She states “When we recognise these myths for what they truly are — myths — new horizons open up. We are free to be who we are at a deeper, more authentic level.”
A central theme that plays through the author’s book is of the negative effects of stress, and in particular of PTSD, upon the tissues of the body. This impact of stress can vastly impair the functioning of our cells and if it is allowed to remain within any of our delicate internal systems. If this is historical — say from childhood trauma then she believes the health implications become vastly compounded.
In her book Scurlock-Durana identifies six specific areas in our bodies which are more incisive when it comes to understanding the health or otherwise of our general well-being. These are;
- Heart – the gift of inspiration
- Gut – the gift of instinctual knowing
- Pelvis – the gift of power
- Legs and Feet – the gift of movement
- Bones – the gift of clarity and steadfastness
- Brain – the gift of an integrated system
In Reclaiming Your Body each area is examined on a chapter by chapter basis along with specific guidance regarding the different channels through which they communicate to us.
Finally, the author concludes with a twenty-eight day plan for the reader to follow — one which leads to that delicate realignment with the age-old wisdom of our cells and inner intelligence.
Our Review of Reclaiming Your Body by Suzanne Scurlock-Durana
Too often we tend to ignore the cranky old misfires and poor cold-morning starts of our physical bodies when in fact they are messages designed to advise us to take some time out, turn off the engine and get down under that hood to fix more serious problems.
The process of reclaiming one’s body is probably one of the best approaches you can take to physical health and in Suzanne Scurlock-Durana’s book the reader is offered some valuable insights and practical guidance.
With guiding questions and anecdotal stories to help the reader along this is a really personalised approach to preventative healthcare. This personal approach also includes the author sharing her own initial issues.
Most readers will, I am sure, relate to a great deal of the childhood traumas that she has experienced and subsequently internalized. It is through her personal and professional experiences that we can understand for ourselves how these early emotional set-backs become trapped deep within the physical body – perhaps for several decades, and then subsequently lead to physical distress and dis-ease later on in life.
Throughout her book Suzanne Scurlock-Durana helps the reader to address and resolves those issues – and she does so with great compassion and consideration. The result is an enormously engaging and deeply fascinating read through which she reconnects us with the simple truth that throwing prescribed chemicals into our body in the vain hope that we can fix those deep-seated medical problems is tantamount to sheer lunacy.
Reclaiming Your Body is a highly recommended read — if not an essential read, should you care enough about your body to want to listen to its inherent wisdom.
