Is your life a cozy existence? If not, then why not?
In her book The Simplicity of Cozy, writer Melissa Alvarez maintains that “love, selfishness, joy, caring, and compassion are keys to cozy living “. In addition, she maintains that the increased sense of personal awareness that the cozy feeling brings can help you to rise above daily problems and appreciate the positives in one’s life. This practice is said by the author to have a transforming influence in your life; wherein you develop a beacon of light within yourself—one which shines out brightly to those around you.
In case you assume that the concept of being cozy and comforted is a very modern idea the author disproves this by referencing the old Scandinavian term ‘hygge’; which in Danish describes the custom of ‘finding pleasure in the simple things, making the ordinary extra ordinary and adding deeper levels of meaningfulness to every part of your day’. In a sense it reveals a recourse to the old concepts of peace, contentment, and enjoyment of the little things during those special moments in life that make the human experience more meaningful.
Alvarez argues that hygge establishes the conditions and circumstances upon which your core spiritual essence can shine through and reveal its true power. She states that, with a little practice, it is something one can enter into at any time of ones choosing.
Heart at Home
The single most suitable environment for the creation of cozy is the home. In her book Alvarez offers guidance on how to turn your most treasured personal space into a sanctuary for peace and tranquillity. Within minutes of entering that place one can relax, destress, and even meditate in ways that can allow the spirit to recharge.
In a similar way an effective environment can be created at other places and locations—such as at work, through the addition of personal artefacts and personalised décor in work spaces. Equally though, a cozy environment can be created through the removal of things; mainly those that no longer serve us well.
Finally, the author suggests that exercises such as yoga, reiki, and dance can aid in the creation of a cozy environment and added further to those self-empowering moments of peace and deeper appreciation of one’s core being.
In The Simplicity of Cozy Alvarez touches upon an important element to sell nurturance, self healing, and spiritual growth. Many who work within the fields of self-development tend to be overly self-critical of themselves and as a consequence create cold or somewhat austere environments around themselves.
The Simplicity of Cozy serves as an empowering and healthy antidote to this but whilst it is well-written it is not a book without core problems. Whilst the ideas contained within its pages are uplifting and insightful it’s central themes tend to become somewhat laboured and repetitive. A number of core principles and ideas are repeated throughout leading to a publication that begins to feel tired and laboured by the time you have encountered them for the third or fourth time.
Nevertheless, it’s central premise is sound and engages in an important aspect to self-development—and that is self-love and self-nurturance.
