Synopsis

Josh Korda is a Dharma follower who teaches and mentors people using a unique blend of Buddhist wisdom and modern neuroscience. Into this his he also mixes a healthy dose of radical punk-rock attitude.

The spiritual road that Korda travelled to reach this point began back in 2001 when, like so many others, the 9/11 terrorist attacks in New York had a dramatic impact upon him. The personal re-evaluation that he subsequently went through forced him to make the decision to leave his high-powered but pressurized advertising job and to finally confront the drug and alcohol addiction it had forced him into.

From that point of revelation forwards his focus was upon moving away from a materialistic existence and to finding a more spiritually fulfilling way to live.

A Radically new Approach

In his book Unsubscribe Korda presents a three-step guide to recovery from addiction, any form reliance upon self-deception, and a life based upon egocentric values. These are:

  1. To reprioritize your goals, away from a materialist vocation toward a fulfilling avocation
  2. To understand yourself and your emotional needs
  3. To connect authentically with others, leading to secure relationships and true community.

Korda explains how together these formulated his own path back to wholeness by integrating Buddhist teachings as a guiding mechanism.

The emphasis here is on the word ‘guiding’ for Korda has little time for any outmoded spiritual concepts, or the use of any form of archaic language. Instead he tackles the challenges of life head-on using spiritual principles as guideposts along the way and not as convenient ways of avoiding them.

He advises that “The key isn’t to focus on the ripples or waves, but on the lake itself which always returns, eventually, to pristine and clear”.

Our Review of Unsubscribe by Josh Korda

In the introduction to his book Korda explains how, over the years of teaching, he has developed his own vernacular style of presentation of the Pali Canon – one that relies on other translations as rough guides. The result is that Unsubscribe is a book of unique character and color – one that reflects the spiritual persona of a fighter and survivor.

Unsubscribe is clever piece of writing. It is simple, but not overly simplistic, practical but not absorbed in tedious work, and supportive but not disempowering. Trying to remain within this middle ground, to carve a way through the doctrine of Buddhism without recourse to excessive theological clutter, is not an easy task but Korda has pulled it off brilliantly and produced a work that is so poignantly pitched to anyone who is teetering on the edge of life and desperate for answers to the deep challenges they face.

Those who understand the human condition best tend not to be the highly qualified academics or pious psychotherapists. Instead it is guides such as Korda who have stood rather precariously on that allegorical ledge and from which have launched themselves whilst trusting in faith to lead them to a safe landing. The experience of reading Unsubscribe feels rather like that for within its pages the author builds that same sense of trust in his philosophy through his openness and honesty.

Unsubscribe is a book for those searching for real hope, powerful guidance and a more rewarding relationship with life. It won’t let you down!
