The modern spirituality movement is based, to a large extent, upon ‘The New Thought Movement’—a late nineteenth-century philosophical system that was founded upon a cross-contamination between physics, science and religion.
It spawned a large body of written work that focussed to a large part on man’s relationship to the Universe—and more specifically, upon the ability of the human mind, through spirit, to change events, circumstances and personal destiny.
Of the many writers and thinkers that were borne from this era, many notable figures emerged who, subsequently, had a profound impact on today’s New Age form of spiritual thinking.
One of the concepts that emerged at this time was that personal success, wealth and abundance could be manifested in an individual’s life through the direct application of specific laws, dynamics or principles that are universal in their application,
The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success: A Practical Guide to the Fulfillment of Your Dreams by writer and Eastern guru Deepak Chopra is an early example of what has now become a major facet to modern spiritual practice.
Originally published in 1995, this book has, through its many reprints and re-publications, touched deeply upon the lives of millions of people—probably more than have been influenced by ‘The Secret’.
Twenty-years on, the book has once again resurfaced and is available to a new generation of readers who are possibly visiting one of Chopra’s earlier written works for the first time.
The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success is a condensed look at what the author has identified as seven specific universal laws that play through our lives and which, if engaged with, can bring us personal success.
The laws that Chopra has identified are:
- The Law of Pure Potentiality
- The Law of Giving and Receiving
- The Law of Karma
- The Law of Least Effort
- The Law of Intention and Desire
- The Law of Detachment
- The Law of Dharma
Each law is commented upon by the author and then some short guidance is offered on how they can be experienced by the reader.
Chopra also comments upon the laws as well as offering spiritual insights regarding the way that they operate in our daily lives.
The book closes with a short afterword and biography of the author.
Our Review of ‘The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success’ by Deepak Chopra
I well recall how influential this book was in formulating my own personal approach to business when I read it for the first time way back in 1995.
At the time, it seemed kind of weird but exciting and spoke in a language that was both understandable and engaging.
Since its first publication in 1995, a great deal has changed in the area of spiritual wealth philosophy. We have witnessed the rapid growth (and decline) of the Cosmic Ordering movement, the massive explosion of interest in the Law of Attraction and a whole sub-genre of magical occultism based upon money-magick and the Law of Manifestation.
So it is that, as a result, this book looks and reads like it is somewhat behind the curve on these subjects—it isn’t, it is just not so comprehensive as many of today’s more extensive works on the topic.
So, with that as a slight caveat, I would say that this is a book that still has a place in today’s fast-moving spiritual movement.
Deepak Chopra has, of course, gone on to become one of the worlds foremost spiritual leaders and, through his subsequent writings, he has expanded upon many of the ideas he first expressed in this book.
This edition of the book is published under the ‘One Hour of Wisdom’ series and this, for me, encapsulates the essence of this small book. Expect no more and no less from it!
