The Rev. Joanna Bartlett did not choose to be a medium — being a medium chose her.
In her book Led by Light she explains “…it’s not a matter of wanting to be one or not, I did, however, choose to pursue developing my gift, instead of continuing to repress and ignore them to the best of my ability.”
Today those gifts have led Bartlett to become a certified medium with the National Spiritualist Association of Churches and the author of several books. She also offers intuitive mediumship mentoring and classes to students all over the United States.
Led by Light is The author’s first of three books about intuitive mediumship — what it is, how it works, how to develop it, and how to use it personally and professionally. This book covers the foundations for developing and controlling your mediumship abilities.
In the opening to her book Rev. Bartlett explains how there are two types of mediumship — mental and physical.
Mental mediumship involves all the Clair senses that is to say those of;
- Clairvoyance – the ability to see psychically
- Clairaudience – the ability to hear psychically
- Clairalience – to be able to smell psychically
- Clairgustance – to be able to taste psychically
- Clairsentience – to feel or sense psychically
- Claircognizance – to have psychic knowing
Physical mediumship on the other hand involves the use of physical phenomena such as the manifestation of the faces of the deceased, their voices, table tipping, trance mediumship, and automatic writing. However, these are becoming rather less-popular methods of mediumship these days.
Those readers who would to understand the process of developing the mental skills are offered a range of practices and techniques through which to build their sensitivity to the world of Spirit. These include lessons on meditation, raising you own vibration; as well as the specific techniques for developing those fledgling clair senses.
Finally, the book closes with a chapter on how to interpret messages and symbols from Spirit. After all there is little point tuning into the inner realms if you do not attune yourself to its insights.
Our Review of Led by Light (Volume 1) by Joanna Bartlett
If you know anything of the author’s work and her enthusiasm for the subject of mediumship then the quality of this book and clarity of its teachings may not come as a surprise to you.
If on the other hand you are, like myself, new to her work then it offers a delightfully refreshing opportunity to understand the fundamentals of psychic work; for this is a book that resonates with a powerful sense of accomplishment.
Led by Light is the first in a series of books by the author and as a result covers much of the initial groundwork. These are areas covered by other writers so in this regard much within these pages is not necessarily new.
However, Led By Light is written from a very personalised perspective which results in a narrative that in highly engaging. The general approach that the author has taken in its writing clearly shows that she is keen to share her knowledge in both a clear and practical way. This will be appreciated greatly by those for whom this subject is new territory.
As a book on practical mediumship this one is well-crafted and very grounded. I very much look forward to further titles in this series by Rev Bartlett and to follow her ideas as they are expanded in future volumes.
